Sans Souci

Sans Souci means without care and the suburb gets its name from Thomas Holt who named his home Sans Souci, after the palace of Frederick the Great of Prussia.

Sans Souci has housed the Sans Souci baths since the late 1890s. In 1931, Kogarah Council replaced the original baths with shark-proof municipal baths, featuring an Art Deco bathing pavilion and dressing rooms. Concerns over river pollution in the early 1960s led to the construction of a 50-meter Olympic swimming pool, later upgraded in 2008 with additional modern facilities named after Bill Saville, President of the Sans Souci Amateur Swimming Club.

Sans Souci is home to the St George Motorboat Club at Wellington Street, and Botany Bay Yacht Club in Endeavour Street. Recreation facilities include Claydon Reserve, named after Kogarah alderman Thomas Claydon. Tourist cruises depart from the marina at Sans Souci Park, providing a leisurely way to explore the Georges River and revel in Sydney’s southern suburban beauty. A cruise on the Georges River offers a serene escape, complete with stunning natural vistas, delectable meals, and delightful company.
