Before the suburb was called Riverwood, it was known as Herne Bay, after a town in England. In 1931, the Herne Bay railway station on the East Hills line was opened. During World War II, the United States Army established the largest military hospital barracks in Australia at Herne Bay, on a 236-acre block.
