Carlton is named after a suburb in Nottingham, England. The land was part of a reward given to Captain John Townson in 1808. It extended from King Georges Road to beyond Kogarah Railway Station. The subdivision of large estates began in 1884 with the railway to Hurstville. Yet, Carlton didn’t get a platform until 1889. Landholders could receive free land if they contributed to the platform and station. Additionally, they were guaranteed a first-class ticket to Sydney for a year.
Today, Carlton features a busy commercial centre around its railway station and along the Princes Highway. It also offers parks for recreation, including Kogarah Park, Tinsdale Reserve, Anglo Square Park, and Augusta Park.
Sports lovers can catch St George Illawarra Dragons games at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium. They can also stroll the Walk of Fame in Park Street, which features St George legends.
