Carlton is named after a suburb in Nottingham, England, and was part of a grant of 1,950 acres (7.9 km2) awarded to Captain John Townson in 1808, extending from King Georges Road and Stoney Creek Road to beyond Kogarah railway station. Subdivision of large estates began with the opening of the railway line to Hurstville in 1884, although Carlton lacked a platform until 1889. Landholders were offered a block of land for free if they contributed £400 towards building the platform and station buildings, along with a guaranteed first-class ticket to Sydney for a year.
Today, Carlton boasts a bustling commercial hub centred around Carlton railway station, with additional commercial developments along the Princes Highway. Carlton also offers green spaces for recreation, including Kogarah Park, Tinsdale Reserve, Anglo Square Park, and Augusta Park.
Sports lovers can catch games of the St George Illawarra Dragons at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium and stroll down the Walk of Fame in Park Street featuring St George legends.
